The Journey to Success

Behind the success of The Gupta Group, we have the inspiring tale of a visionary immigrant from India who came to Canada with his wife, Rashmi, in 1973. This humble beginning came with its fair share of hurdles as the couple grappled with frightening levels of unfamiliarity in a foreign nation. However, Steve and Rashmi came prepared with a strong command of the English language and quality education.Facing the reality of the immigrant dream, Steve Gupta started off by taking on a job as an insurance salesman, where he had to undertake the laborious task of making door-to-door sales pitches in local communities and apartment high-rises. It wasn’t until 1978, five years from the day he landed in Canada, that made his first business investment – a truck stop in Port Hope, Ontario.

The Turning Point

The purchase of this truck stop marked the beginning of a remarkable story of resilience and ambition. Mr. Gupta managed to rejuvenate the business, turning it into a thriving venture. This marked a clear departure from his early struggles as an immigrant. By the early 1980s, he was already making numerous property investments, including those same apartment buildings where he had once tried to sell insurance policies door-to-door. This incredible journey serves as evidence of Mr. Gupta’s long-standing involvement in the real estate development industry.

Entering the Hotel Industry

In 1997, Mr. Gupta took the first leap into the hotel industry by purchasing an old RCMP building located in the heart of Toronto, at Dundas and Jarvis. This purchase initiated a new chapter for the enterprising Mr. Gupta and fortified his standing as a leading businessman. From here, he embarked on an impressive growth journey by expanding his operations to other cities such as Montreal, Sudbury, and Peterborough.His success in the hotel industry earned him accolades and recognition unprecedented in the industry. He received the coveted Marriott Outstanding Contribution Award and the Hilton Developer of the Year Award in 2009. Mr. Gupta made history as the first Canadian and South Asian to win the esteemed Marriott Horizon Partnership Circle Award.

A Family-Focused Businessman

In addition to being an astute businessman, Mr. Steve Gupta also proved to be an exemplary father. He passed on his passion, wisdom, and leadership skills to his daughters Reetu and Shelley, who actively contributed to the expanding success of The Gupta Group.Reetu, after gaining practical experience in their father’s hotels and earning an MBA from Schulich School of Business, rose to the position of Chief Operating Officer for the company, having previously served as the Director of Sales and Marketing.Shelley, who also secured an MBA degree, from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, went on to serve as their father’s company’s Executive Director of Finance and Condo Development, before moving to Chicago to work as Senior Strategy Consultant for the information and technology firm, Accenture.

A New Venture in Condominium Development

Guided by his strategic vision and leveraging the unwavering support of his daughters, Mr. Steve Gupta made a bold entry into the world of residential condominiums. Their inaugural project was the upscale King Blue Condos, located at King Street West and Blue Jays Way, bagging three awards at the distinguished BILD Awards. This successful venture motivated them to evolve Mr. Gupta’s first hotel based at Dundas and Jarvis into the Dundas Square Gardens, a colossal real estate project constituting 978 units, reasserting their interest in residential condo investments.
