    The Inception of Cityscape Development Corporation

    The foursome leading the Cityscape team are real estate lawyer John Berman, broker Mathew Rosenblatt, architect Jamie Goad, and urban planner David Jackson. Their first collaboration dates back to 1997 when they ingeniously converted an industrial loft in Little Italy, Toronto. The structure was a former public movie house, located at Euclid Avenue and College Street. The team masterfully transformed this heritage building into uniquely designed residential units, leaving its original brick and beam touches intact.The success of this project was instrumental in the formation of the Cityscape Development Corporation. Under this ambitious banner, they rolled up their sleeves and prepared to embark on one of Toronto’s most influential urban revitalization projects—the historic Distillery District.

    The Journey towards Revitalizing the Distillery District

    In 2001, the team set their sights on a former distillery, the Gooderham and Worts, located at the heart of Toronto’s harbour area. The distillery began as a flour mill in 1832 and eventually transformed into the hub of a global whisky business. Despite being declared a historic site in 1988, it had remained unused and unnoticed for decades.Encouraged by the robust collection of brick and limestone buildings, spacious courtyards interconnected by cobblestone pathways, and large windows that flooded the space with ample sunlight, the Cityscape team decided to breathe new life into this neglected space.

    Their efforts turned the Distillery District into what it is today—an effervescent neighborhood adored by tourists and residents alike. The area is now known for a fine blend of modern condominiums, gallery spaces, artisan restaurants, and preserved heritage features like cobblestone sidewalks, industrial structures, and the vintage clock tower.

    Recognitions and Reputations

    Cityscape’s dedication to creating unique residences and expertise in conversions and historic restorations garnered praise from city officials and heritage advocates. In 2004, the Canadian Urban Institute awarded Cityscape the Best Large Scale Project designation for their exceptional work in the Distillery District.Their creativity and dedication to preserving this historical site reflect in other downtown neighbourhoods as well. Portland Park Village and the Wellington Worx lofts are among some of their highly successful projects. Cityscape is also set to return to the location that began their journey, with new residential condominium projects at 60 Mill Street and 34 Parliament Street in the pre-construction phase.

    Upcoming Projects: 60 Mill Street and 34 Parliament Street

    Slated to be a 12-storey mid-rise, 60 Mill Street is set to have preserved façade reflecting the historical architecture of the community. On the contrary, the 45-storey condominium at 34 Parliament Street is to have a contemporary feel, aligning with the modern demands of city dwellers.

    Cityscape’s Exceptional Condominiums

    A hallmark of Cityscape’s ingenuity is the Pure Spirit Lofts and Condos at 33 Mill Street. Standing tall with 33 storeys and comprising 380 units, it has the distinction of being the first condominium built in the Distillery District. Another noteworthy condominium project is the Gooderham Condominiums at 39 Cherry Street, which stands 36 stories tall featuring luxurious amenities for residents.One more gem from Cityscape’s well-crafted portfolio is the Portland Park Village at 550 Front Street West. This project houses residential units with retail space and closely connects with the Hip King Street West.
